Paul Trowbridge
PAUL TROWBRIDGE
Towbridge's recent work includes a series of paintings as a form of protest against a proposed subdivision on the Salt Pond Blueberry Barrens. The spot is cherished by the Mikmaw people, often painted, and an important landscape of natural Maine flora and fauna. The developer planned to build nine mansions on 30-plus acres of land. In response, Paul decided to create nine paintings—one for each proposed lot—to highlight the beauty of the land that was at risk. The project was magical for Paul, as he painted mostly in September under perfect 70-degree weather; the colors growing richer and more red as the season progressed.. He found constant inspiration, noting that, "every time I turned, there was another view that was inspiring."
Trowbridge’s past work is bold and stark, a study of waterfront workmen, the work ethic and the “can do” attitude. The sea influences his work and those around him with beauty as well as foul weather; it provides the base resource of our area which is hard to ignore.
Trowbridge has a BA in the arts from Principia College, studied at the Boston Museum School and the University of Maine, and holds a Masters in Fine Art from the University of Memphis. He has worked in animation with Noel Stookey in Blue Hill, taught watercolor at Woodenboat School, shown works at many venues on the Blue Hill Peninsula and beyond. He and his wife, Jennifer, live in Sedgwick.
