Professor Emerita of Art at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, Lynn Duryea has returned to Maine full-time to work at Sawyer Street Studios, an artist-owned facility in South Portland of which she is a co-owner, and in her Deer Isle studio. Lynn is a Founding Trustee of Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, and was the Program Coordinator and Artist-in-Residence for The Watershed Workshop for People with HIV/AIDS. She was a recipient of the Maine Crafts Association 2012 Master Craft Award, and an Emerging Artist at the 2004 NCECA Conference (National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts. Lynn was the first visual artist to receive Portland, Maine’s YWCA Women of Achievement Award. Her work is represented in numerous publications, most recently “The Poetics of Space and Place: Lynn Duryea’s Sculpture”, an article by Jim Toub in Ceramics Art + Perception. Lynn’s work has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally and resides in both public and private collections. She earned her MFA from the University of Florida.

Of her work Lynn says:

The ordinary can be quite extraordinary. Through objects of insistent profile and reductive form, my reference is to a variety of structural elements: architectural, mechanical and industrial. The representation of function is in an allusive and enigmatic sense, suggestive of the past. Close consideration of these images of simplicity and stillness reveals a sense of history, traces of transformation that generate narratives of accretion and deterioration.
