"Hillcrest Orchard is a family-owned apple orchard in Winterport, Maine. My first photographs of this orchard were made in 2004 and since 2009 I have made thousands of photographs within the eighty-acre site. The orchard was severely damaged in the Great Ice Storm of 1998, and it is no longer harvested. Most of its acres have been left to change as they will. While still blooming and bearing fruit, the old trees are becoming overwhelmed by the encroaching forest and voracious underbrush. The transformation from constructed agricultural plantation to diverse natural environment is happening gradually, albeit unrelentingly. I hope that my continuing identification with this process and its effects is evident in the photographs." -Michael Alpert, February, 2012
