"Travel creates opportunities to see with new perspective. While in Southern France in February, I observed several days of very turbulent ocean. Even though I had never represented surf before, I was drawn to it, and spent two afternoons on the beach, drawing the movement in sketchbooks. It was challenging and compelling to try to capture one moment in a continuous thrash of water. I made watercolor studies from my observations, and when I returned to Maine decided to continue the project with watercolor, gouache, and acrylic paintings. Each painting was a challenge – my goal was to use marks, color, and composition to express the movement of a specific time. As the paintings developed, and I hung them together, I became interested in how their contrasts established a time continuum and sense of collective energy that we observe while watching the ocean." - Nina Jerome
